Individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia may have a hard time with basic daily activities. Here are some helpful tips to help your loved one cope with daily living:
Dressing
To minimize the challenge of dressing, keep dressing time consistent, encourage your loved one to dress at the same time each day. Keep clothing options to a few choices, invite them to help and provide step-by-step dressing instructions when needed.
Bathing
Keep bathing and shower routines consistent, ensure you explain what you are going to do step-by-step to keep the individual calm. Make sure you have everything you will need ready in advance, and consider using grab bars and mats to increase safety and prevent falls.
Eating
Create and maintain a regular and familiar meal time routine that allows for adaptations to the needs of your loved one. Keep food choices, textures, colours and flavours to a minimum; this will assist your loved one and will help them to enjoy the basic pleasures of eating.
